About the test
This test detects IgM antibodies to the rubella virus. IgM is used when rubella is clinically suspected, rather than for routine screening of people without symptoms. It may also appear after recent vaccination.
A positive IgM result requires careful assessment and sometimes confirmation by another method: false-positive results are possible. It does not, by itself, establish fetal infection; interpretation is particularly important during pregnancy.
