About the test

S100 is the name of a group of calcium-binding proteins found in various body cells, including nerve and skin cells. Blood testing is used in selected clinical situations, including monitoring patients with melanoma when included in the medical plan.

An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. Non-tumour tissue injury can also change the measurement. The particular S100 fraction measured should be clarified with the laboratory.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement investigation ordered by a relevant specialist.
  • Assess changes in the marker during follow-up and treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
