About the test
Semen analysis assesses the main characteristics of ejaculate and sperm and is used when investigating male reproductive function. The test may describe sperm count and movement and other sample properties within the laboratory programme. The result helps the doctor choose further investigation of the couple, rather than assessing fertility in isolation from the whole situation.
Semen characteristics vary, so repeat tests are sometimes required. Extended morphology assessment and the MAR test are listed separately and are not automatically assumed to be included. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
