About the test
SHBG is a transport protein that binds some sex hormones in blood, including testosterone. It is measured when total testosterone does not fully explain symptoms or androgen availability to tissues needs clarification.
SHBG changes in liver and thyroid diseases and under the influence of hormonal medicines; it is not itself a sex hormone. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.
