About the test

Sodium is the main electrolyte in extracellular fluid and helps maintain fluid balance and normal nerve and muscle function. The test helps assess abnormal sodium concentrations caused by changes in water intake or loss, kidney disease and endocrine conditions. The result is often considered together with other electrolytes and osmolarity.

Sodium concentration is not the same as the amount of salt consumed. Both high and low results may primarily relate to disturbed fluid balance. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess sodium concentration.
  • Clarify fluid and electrolyte disorders.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
