Testing joint, or synovial, fluid helps clarify the causes of joint pain, swelling and inflammation. The sample is obtained through a medical procedure at the doctor’s discretion. Synovial fluid analysis may involve different laboratory stages; the characteristics and methods actually included in this service must be clarified.
Crystal examination, culture or identification of a specific pathogen cannot automatically be assumed to be included. The result is interpreted in the context of the type of joint disease. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
