About the test
The culture is intended to detect Staphylococcus aureus at the selected sampling site. Staphylococcus aureus may be present in the nose without symptoms of disease; this is called carriage.
The doctor assesses the result according to the purpose of the investigation and signs of infection. Isolation of a pure culture does not, by itself, mean determination of MRSA resistance or a complete antibiotic susceptibility panel; additional capabilities are agreed separately.
