Throat swab microscopy describes the visible cellular and microbial elements in material collected from the pharyngeal mucosa. The test may be used as an additional laboratory stage for selected clinical questions. Its diagnostic significance depends on the stain chosen, the reason for referral and the presence of normal microflora at this site.
Conventional microscopy does not replace a targeted test for streptococci, diphtheria or culture. A specific pathogen cannot be reliably identified from the general name of this service. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
