About the test

Thrombin time assesses the final stage of coagulation, the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin after thrombin is added. The test helps clarify abnormal coagulation results and suspected fibrinogen deficiency or dysfunction. It is also sensitive to a range of substances affecting fibrin clot formation, including heparin.

A prolonged time does not identify a single cause of the disorder. Traces of anticoagulant in the sample and medicines being taken must be considered during interpretation. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess fibrin clot formation.
  • Clarify abnormalities in a coagulation panel.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
