About the test

Thyroglobulin is a protein produced by thyroid cells and involved in thyroid hormone formation. The test is often used for follow-up after treatment of selected types of differentiated thyroid cancer. It is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test in healthy people.

The value depends on the presence of thyroid tissue, treatment received and TSH level. Thyroglobulin antibodies can interfere with measurement and are therefore considered together with the result. Changes over time are assessed by the treating doctor.

Why it is ordered

  • Monitor the condition after treatment as directed by a doctor.
  • Assess trends together with thyroglobulin antibodies.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
