About the test

TSH is a pituitary hormone that regulates thyroid function. The test measures its concentration in blood. It is used when insufficient or excessive thyroid hormone production is suspected and when monitoring treatment.

TSH is assessed together with free T4, symptoms and information about treatment. Pregnancy, certain medicines and pituitary diseases can alter interpretation; one result does not establish the cause of a disorder.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess regulation of thyroid function.
  • Monitor changes in the measurement during treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
