About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a blood specimen. The test searches for tick-borne encephalitis virus genetic material; it is not an antibody test following infection or vaccination.

The possibility of detecting the virus varies with the stage of infection. With neurological manifestations, PCR may be negative, and the doctor considers serology and other clinical information.

The usefulness of a blood test depends on the clinical situation and the timing of specimen collection. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect tick-borne encephalitis virus genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
