About the test

The test investigates IgM antibodies to tick-borne encephalitis virus when a recent infection is suspected. IgM is used in serological diagnosis together with clinical manifestations and epidemiological information. Symptom onset, vaccination and possible exposure to other flaviviruses are important for correct assessment.

IgM may persist after the acute phase; cross-reactions are possible. A positive result requires medical assessment, and a negative result does not replace investigation when symptoms of nervous system involvement are present. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Investigate IgM when tick-borne encephalitis is suspected.
  • Complement clinical diagnosis in the context of disease timing.
