About the test
Alpha-amylase is an enzyme involved in carbohydrate breakdown. Its total activity in blood is measured when investigating the pancreas and salivary glands. The test may complement investigation of abdominal pain and suspected pancreatic injury. Total amylase includes enzyme from different sources and differs from measuring only the pancreatic fraction.
An increase can occur in conditions other than pancreatitis, and normal activity does not always exclude pancreatic disease. The doctor may consider lipase and other findings. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
