About the test
Total bilirubin reflects the combined concentration of bilirubin, a pigment formed mainly during haemoglobin breakdown. The liver processes bilirubin and excretes it in bile. The test helps investigate jaundice, disorders of the liver and bile ducts, and conditions involving increased red blood cell breakdown.
The total measurement does not show which fraction predominates. Direct bilirubin and other investigations may be needed to establish the cause of an increase. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Assess bilirubin metabolism.
- Complement investigation of the causes of jaundice.
