About the test
Total cholesterol measures the combined amount of cholesterol in the different blood lipoproteins and forms part of an assessment of lipid metabolism. Cholesterol is needed for cell membranes and the synthesis of certain substances, but an excess in specific fractions is associated with atherosclerosis. The measurement is used for initial assessment and to monitor changes while following medical advice.
The same total cholesterol level can occur with different LDL and HDL levels. It therefore does not replace analysis of individual fractions and personalised risk assessment. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
