About the test
The test measures the total amount of immunoglobulin IgM, a class of protective antibodies involved in the early humoral immune response. The test is used for recurrent infections, suspected immune disorders and clarification of changes in blood proteins.
Total immunoglobulin does not identify antibodies to a particular pathogen. A decrease or increase requires comparison with other immunoglobulins and the clinical picture. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.
