About the test

Total iron-binding capacity characterises the ability of blood proteins to bind iron. This item also assesses serum iron and the unoccupied portion of binding capacity. Comparing these measurements helps clarify how much iron is transported by proteins and how many potential binding sites remain free. The test complements ferritin when distinguishing possible causes of anaemia and disorders of iron metabolism.

Results change not only in iron deficiency but also in inflammation, liver disease and altered transferrin levels. This is not a direct measurement of tissue iron stores. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess iron transport and binding.
  • Clarify the pattern of disorders of iron metabolism.
