About the test
Total PSA reflects the concentration of a protein produced by prostate cells, including free and bound forms. It is used in prostate assessment and follow-up after treatment; whether early cancer detection is appropriate is discussed individually with the doctor.
PSA may increase in benign prostatic enlargement and inflammation. An increase is not the same as cancer, and a normal value does not exclude it completely. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.
