About the test

Total T3 reflects the combined amount of free and protein-bound triiodothyronine in blood. It helps clarify the pattern of thyroid dysfunction, particularly when thyrotoxicosis is suspected. T3 helps regulate metabolism.

The result is considered together with TSH and T4, symptoms and treatment. Transport protein levels, pregnancy and certain medicines can affect total T3. An isolated change is not a standalone diagnosis.

Why it is ordered

  • Clarify thyroid dysfunction.
  • Complement TSH and T4 results when thyrotoxicosis is suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
