About the test

This test measures IgM antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii, the organism that causes toxoplasmosis. IgM may be detected after infection, but sometimes persists for a long time or produces a nonspecific positive result. It is usually assessed alongside IgG.

When toxoplasmosis is suspected, particularly during pregnancy, confirmatory tests and assessment by a doctor are important. An early negative result does not always exclude infection; a single positive marker does not determine the risk to the fetus. If necessary, the doctor considers IgG avidity and other methods.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the antibody response to Toxoplasma gondii.
  • Complement testing when clinically indicated.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
