About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in urine. Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. A molecular test searches for material from the organism itself, rather than antibodies to it.

The choice of specimen and method depends on the suspected form of infection. This test does not replace serology in every situation; a negative result in one specimen does not exclude toxoplasmosis.

A urine test concerns this specimen and does not exclude the presence of the organism at other sites in the body. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Toxoplasma gondii genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
