About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in urine. Trichomonas vaginalis is a protozoan microorganism that causes urogenital trichomoniasis.

Molecular testing helps detect the organism, including when symptoms are atypical. The result concerns the selected specimen and does not replace testing for other infections when indicated.

A urine test concerns this specimen and does not exclude the presence of the organism at other sites in the body. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Trichomonas vaginalis genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
