About the test

The test detects autoantibodies to TSH receptors on thyroid cells. It is primarily used to clarify Graves disease in people with increased thyroid function and in selected follow-up situations.

This test is not the same as TSH measurement and does not always determine the functional type of antibodies. It is assessed together with TSH and free thyroid hormones. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.

Why it is ordered

  • Clarify an autoimmune cause of thyrotoxicosis.
  • Complement monitoring of Graves disease.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
