About the test
Urea is formed during protein metabolism and excreted mainly by the kidneys. A blood test helps assess its accumulation in the body. It is used when investigating kidney function and fluid balance, usually together with creatinine. A change may relate both to urea excretion and to the amount of protein breakdown products formed.
Diet, dehydration, tissue breakdown and liver condition affect the result. Urea and urea nitrogen are related but are not identical laboratory quantities. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Complement assessment of kidney function.
- Assess changes in protein metabolism and urea excretion.
