About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a scraping specimen. Ureaplasmas may form part of the urogenital microbiota and be detected in people without symptoms.

The name species does not indicate whether the test differentiates individual species. A positive result without clinical assessment does not establish disease or provide an independent basis for treatment.

The scraping site should correspond to the purpose of the investigation. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Ureaplasma species genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
