About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in urine. The test targets a specific Ureaplasma species, Ureaplasma urealyticum.

This microorganism is also found in carriers. Its detection is not equivalent to a diagnosis of infection; the significance of the result depends on symptoms and other causes of inflammation.

A urine test concerns this specimen and does not exclude the presence of the organism at other sites in the body. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Ureaplasma urealyticum genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
