About the test

Uric acid is formed when purines are broken down. Its concentration is used when investigating gout and disorders of purine metabolism. Excess uric acid may be accompanied by crystal formation in joints or the urinary tract. The test is also used for monitoring in kidney disease and certain types of treatment.

A high level does not necessarily mean that a person has gout. During an attack the measurement may not be elevated; the cause of joint pain is established through a comprehensive assessment. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess uric acid metabolism.
  • Complement investigation of suspected gout.
  • Monitor the measurement as directed by a doctor.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
