About the test

The albumin-to-creatinine ratio in a spot urine sample helps detect small amounts of albumin loss and assess signs of kidney injury. Using creatinine partly accounts for differences in urine dilution. The test is used, in particular, when monitoring people with diabetes, high blood pressure and other kidney disease risk factors.

The term microalbumin refers to a small amount of albumin, not to a separate protein. Temporary increases require assessment of the circumstances and sometimes confirmation by repeat testing. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect and assess albuminuria.
  • Complement risk assessment and monitoring of kidney disease.
