About the test

Urine alpha-amylase, also called diastase, is an enzyme measurement that may complement investigation of the pancreas and salivary glands. Some blood amylase is excreted by the kidneys, so its activity can also change in urine. The test is assessed together with blood amylase or lipase, symptoms and kidney function.

An increase is not specific to pancreatitis, and a normal result does not exclude all pancreatic diseases. Values from different sample types and methods are not directly combined. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Measure amylase activity in urine.
  • Complement investigation of suspected enzyme abnormalities.

How to prepare
