About the test

The Zimnitsky test assesses urine output and changes in specific gravity in separate samples collected over 24 hours. It helps characterise the kidneys’ ability to concentrate and dilute urine. Interpretation depends on the distribution of volume between portions, specific gravity and information about fluid intake during collection.

This test is not identical to routine urinalysis. Instructions for separate sample collection must be obtained from the laboratory; failure to follow the collection schedule limits diagnostic value. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the kidneys’ concentrating ability.
  • Investigate the distribution of urine output over 24 hours.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
