About the test
The test measures glucose in a urine sample and helps clarify detected glucosuria. The kidneys normally return most filtered glucose to the blood. Urine glucose may increase with elevated blood glucose, particular renal transport characteristics and the effects of certain medicines.
Urine glucose does not replace blood glucose or HbA1c testing for diabetes diagnosis and monitoring. Absence of urine glucose does not guarantee normal blood glucose. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
