About the test
Ketone bodies are formed when fats are used as an energy source. This test detects them in urine. The measurement is used when impaired carbohydrate metabolism and increased ketone formation are suspected, including in people with diabetes. Ketones may also appear in other conditions associated with inadequate energy intake.
A urine test does not measure all ketone bodies equally and may lag behind changes in blood. In someone who is very unwell, it must not delay seeking medical care. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
