About the test

This quantitative test measures the protein concentration in a urine sample and helps clarify the presence of protein loss. Normally, the kidney filter retains most blood proteins. Increased urine protein may accompany various kidney function disorders or temporary conditions; the test complements routine urinalysis.

Concentration depends on how dilute the urine is. It is not the same as daily protein loss, for which a separate test option is available. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Quantify urine protein.
  • Clarify changes in routine urinalysis.
