About the test
The test measures urea in urine, a product of protein metabolism excreted mainly by the kidneys. For specific indications, it may complement assessment of nitrogenous substance excretion and protein metabolism. The result is interpreted according to sample type, urine volume and parallel blood measurements, if ordered.
Concentration in a spot sample is not the same as daily excretion. Daily loss or nitrogen balance cannot automatically be calculated without clarifying the collection type. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
