Urogenital smear examination

A urogenital smear assesses material from the genitourinary tract and may help detect signs of local inflammation. The laboratory findings are compared with symptoms and the sampling site. The list of measurements and method must be clarified with the laboratory, especially when identifying a specific pathogen or distinguishing carriage from disease is required.

This smear should not be regarded as a universal test for all sexually transmitted infections. Negative microscopy does not exclude pathogens that require targeted methods. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
