About the test

The test assesses the amount of protein excreted in urine over 24 hours and helps characterise the severity of proteinuria. Daily protein loss is considered when investigating and monitoring kidney disease. Unlike concentration in a spot sample, the result relates to the total urine volume collected over the specified period.

Missing some urine or reporting the total volume incorrectly can distort the calculation. Collection instructions and sample submission must be agreed with the laboratory. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess daily protein loss.
  • Monitor the severity of proteinuria.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
