About the test

The test determines ABO blood group and Rh status by the presence of the RhD antigen on red blood cells. These characteristics are important for planning blood transfusion, pregnancy care and medical procedures. They describe blood cell antigens, not the presence of disease or immune status; ABO and Rh are different blood group systems.

The result does not replace compatibility testing before transfusion. ABO and RhD typing does not automatically include extended phenotyping or a search for all red blood cell antibodies. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Establish ABO group and RhD type.
  • Provide information for pregnancy care.
  • Complement preparation for medical care in which blood group is important.

How to prepare
