About the test

Alpha-1-antitrypsin is a protein that protects tissues from excessive activity of certain enzymes. Its level is investigated when deficiency of this protein is suspected. Deficiency may be associated with inherited changes and lung or liver injury. Measuring the concentration helps choose further investigations, which may include protein variants or genetic characteristics when necessary.

The concentration can increase during inflammation and mask a deficiency. Quantitative measurement does not replace genetic or phenotypic testing when indicated. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess possible alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency.
  • Complement investigation of certain lung and liver diseases.
