Cortisol is an adrenal cortex hormone involved in the response to stress, metabolism and maintenance of blood pressure. The test is ordered when excessive or insufficient adrenal function is suspected and to clarify hormonal disorders.
Cortisol follows a daily rhythm; stress and certain medicines change its level. A single measurement does not replace specialised diagnostic tests. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.
