Free PSA is the portion of prostate-specific antigen that circulates in blood without being bound to proteins. It is measured mainly together with total PSA to refine assessment of the likelihood of different prostate diseases.
Free PSA alone does not establish a diagnosis. The value and ratio of fractions are assessed in the context of total PSA, examination and other information. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.
