About the test
HE4 is a protein marker that may increase in certain epithelial ovarian tumours. It is measured in selected clinical situations for monitoring and, together with CA 125, for calculation of specific risk algorithms.
An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. HE4 alone does not replace assessment of an ovarian mass or determine whether it is benign or malignant.
