About the test
This test detects IgG antibodies to herpes simplex virus type 2. IgG usually reflects a previously established immune response; antibodies may persist for a long time. Type-specific testing helps clarify contact specifically with HSV-2.
Serology does not determine the site of infection or prove that current lesions are active. Early negative and false-positive results are possible; if necessary, the doctor confirms uncertain findings. When a lesion is present, an appropriate direct test is selected.
