About the test

This test detects IgM antibodies to herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. HSV IgM testing has significant limitations: IgM may be detected during recurrent episodes and does not reliably distinguish recent infection from a long-standing infection.

The CDC does not recommend HSV IgM for the diagnosis of herpes. When lesions are present, detecting the virus in a specimen from the lesion is usually more informative. A positive or negative IgM result must not be the sole basis for diagnosis or treatment.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the serological response to HSV, taking the method’s limitations into account.
  • Discuss the need for direct or confirmatory testing with a doctor.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
