About the test

A platelet count measures the number of cellular elements involved in stopping bleeding and forming the initial blood clot. The test helps clarify a low or high platelet count found in a complete blood count and monitor it over time. Changes may occur in blood disorders, infections and during treatment.

The number of platelets and their ability to function are different characteristics. Sometimes a result needs checking because platelets have clumped in the sample. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Clarify the platelet count.
  • Monitor thrombocytopenia or thrombocytosis.
