About the test

Rheumatoid factor is a group of autoantibodies whose detection helps investigate rheumatoid arthritis and certain other conditions. The test is most often ordered for persistent joint pain, swelling or stiffness. It is considered together with examination, inflammatory markers and, when appropriate, antibodies to cyclic citrullinated peptides.

RF can be positive without rheumatoid arthritis, while a negative result does not exclude it. The test alone does not establish the cause of joint symptoms. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement investigation of suspected rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Assess the presence of rheumatoid factor.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
