About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a blood specimen. The test concerns the molecular diagnosis of tick-borne typhus, an infection in the rickettsiosis group.

The specific Rickettsia species and capabilities of the test system must be clarified with the laboratory. The amount of the organism in the blood may be small, so a negative result cannot independently exclude the disease.

The usefulness of a blood test depends on the clinical situation and the timing of specimen collection. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect genetic material from the organism causing tick-borne typhus in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
