About the test

Total protein measures the combined concentration of the main blood proteins and helps assess protein metabolism and related disorders. It includes albumin and globulins, which perform transport, protective and other functions. The measurement is used when investigating the liver, kidneys, nutritional disorders and conditions involving protein loss or altered protein production.

Changes in total protein can reflect fluid balance as well as the amount of protein. Separate albumin or protein fraction testing may sometimes be needed for clarification. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the total amount of blood proteins.
  • Complement investigation of the liver, kidneys and protein metabolism.
