About the test

The Nechiporenko test quantitatively assesses selected urine sediment elements and helps clarify abnormalities in routine urinalysis. The method counts white blood cells, red blood cells and casts in a standardised urine volume. It may be used when investigating inflammation, blood in the urine and certain kidney diseases.

The test does not identify the cause of detected cellular changes and does not replace culture when infection is suspected. Correct sample collection affects the result. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Clarify the number of sediment cells.
  • Complement investigation of abnormalities in routine urinalysis.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
