About the test

A stool specimen is examined by culture to detect certain bacteria that may cause intestinal infections. The exact list of targets is determined by the service’s scope and must be clarified with the laboratory.

A negative culture does not exclude all causes of diarrhoea: viruses, parasites and bacteria outside the specified panel are not assessed by this test. The result is compared with symptoms and other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect bacteria included in the agreed enteric culture.
  • Complement testing when a bacterial intestinal infection is suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
